Holy Winged Creatures Batman!!!

Headed into check out Cairns City Central this afternoon as we wanted to book trips to Kuranda by train and also skyrail. Robert has decided to come with me on skyrail so we'll go to Kuranda by train with John and Lorraine then return crossing the canopy of the rainforest.

Before we reached the numerous info and booking centres, our path took us under huge trees that were laden with "squawking, screeching fruit" - bats! Hundreds of them clung to high branches as people walked to shops, restaurants, hotels and the beach. Fascinating creatures (as long as they're not in your backyard).

Dusk saw many of them wing their way in different directions looking for food. To watch them change from a pendulous, folded creature to a flying bird-like animal is something to see - the shaped-wings evoke images of darkness and the famous, brooding BATMAN or the camp (nananana) Batman - for those of you who are old enough to remember the original television series with Adam West.

The spectacular lagoon created by some out-there designers was fenced off while maintenance work was being done. It is a safe place to swim with lifeguards on duty and less than a metre in depth. (We're amazed at the number of swimmers who ignore the signs warning of crocodiles). Sculptured fish stand on tall posts with water spouts popping up to add more interest to the lagoon.

The day started with almost cloudless skies and bright sunshine - it was lovely to be able to ride with the windows down. Overcast skies drifted in later in the afternoon and rain began falling just before dusk. It's still a very comfortable temperature although the locals think it's cold. I think they need to travel south to understand what cold feels like.
